Upper Mustang Trek


Overview

Upper Mustang Trek also referred to Lo Manthang Trek. This could be a another way to experience Tibet in Nepal. Being a Trans Himalayan region, the culture, religion, language, people and life style is similar to Tibet. They have been live there for hundreds of years and have little contact to the rest of the world including capital of Nepal. The Upper Mustang (kingdom) was founded by Ame Pal in the 14th century. The palace was all surrounded by a stone wall which is still standing with great attractions to the people.

Before unifying Nepal it was an independent Lo Kingdom. Nepal was unified in the 18th century out of many small independent countries including Lo Manthang. The king was very respected and honored in Lo kingdom even today. Jigme parwal Bista (25th king) is the last king of Lo Manthang. Nepal became a federal country in 2008 and they declared that there is no more monarchy including Lo Manthang. Lo Manthang is a tiny small village with less than 1000 people (Lobas ethnic people) and about 200 houses.
Accommodation and meal in Upper Mustang trekking: The trekking trail to Upper Mustang follow the Annapurna circuit trail till Kagbeni and separates towards north west. There are nice guest house accommodations and they provide delicious and hygiene food to their house guest.
Clothing: Upper Mustang trekking passes above 5000m. It can be a below freezing in winter. You are advised to be prepared with good trekking clothing’s or write us email to suggest you a proper gear to your time of travel.
Best time to trek Upper Mustang : The best time to trek to Upper Mustang is from April to September. The people celebrate a big festival known as TIJI which falls as a Tibetan calendar. In that festival time, the villagers back to their home town from abroad, Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Trekking Permit to Upper Mustang: You have obtained a special trekking permit to trek to Upper Mustang area (Kagbeni to north). Trekking permit can be applying through registered trekking agency. The trekking permit would cost US$500 for first 10 days and US$50/ additional day. You must be 2 or more person to apply the permit. We Alpine Asian Treks and Expedition P Ltd can apply your trekking permit.

Permit and regulations: The trekkers must buy a trekking permit to trek to Upper Mustang through the registered trekking agency. Permit will be issue for minimum 10 days and additional each day will cost US$50/ trekkers. That must buy in advance from Kathmandu. Our company Alpine Asian Treks can apply your trekking permit.

Weather and climate: Upper Mustang trekking (northern part from Kagbeni) is considered trans Himalayan region (rain shadow). Generally, there is very little rain.  and trekking is possible in rainy season as well as. The temperature in spring is about 0 degree at night and around 20 degrees in a sunny day. Monsoon season (June to September)

Spring Season: Spring season remain still cold. The temperature would be around 0 degree at night and 20degree in a sunny day.

Rainy Season (June to September: The temperature would remain around 20-30 degree.

Winter season (December to February) : The winter is very cold in Upper Mustang. The temperature would remain 0—5 in a day and -20 to -25 in at night.

Trekking Guide to Upper Mustaing: Your trekking guide to Upper Musgang will have a previous experiences and government license. He keeps knowledge about mountain sickness, local people, culture and geography. The guide speaks English language and if you require any your local language speaking please do let us know before finalize.

Trekking equipment in Upper Mustang trekking: The Upper Mustang trekking is considered as demanding trekking. It requires good preparation to complete it well such as proper clothing and physical fitness. This could be some rain in rainy season and very cold in winter. Please write us about the details of trekking gears before your trek.

Accommodation and meal in Upper Mustang trekking: There are nice, clean guest house in trekking route to Upper Mustang. Trekkers can have their own room (twin/ single) and bathroom are common. Some villages even offer private bathroom like Lomanthang. The guest house provides a meal service to their house guest. You can order your meal from guest house menu. They prepare tasty and hygiene food.

Transportation to Upper Mustang trekking: There is a rough road access till Lo-Manthang from Pokhara. The trek starts from Kagbeni after a flight ro drive to Jomsom and end in Kagbeni. The Jomsom airport is situated in between the high mountain, there may have flight cancellation due to bad weather and the road could be disturbed due to land slide in a rainy season.

Telephone and internet in Upper Mustang Trekking: Some guest house offer WIFI services in the trekking trail. Additionally, you can buy a SIM card in card in Kathmandu or Pokhara and buy a internet packages to use in trekking. Generally cell phone work all along the trail.

Pricing of Upper Mustang Trekking: The price will be in US$ or equivalent in Nepalese currency. The price will define the services and quality. We will give you a clear details while providing an itinerary and details with includes and excludes.

Insurance: Our guide and porter will have an insurance as per Nepal government rule. We highly recommend to our clients to bring their own rescue and medical insurance to trek to Upper Mustang.

Safety and security: Trekking in Nepal is very safe. There is no any single record of crime to the trekkers. You must be fully equipped to avoid the cold or etc. There is security check post in Jomsom, Kagbeni and Lo-Manthang. We can’t predict about natural disaster.

Can you trek alone: There must be minimum 2 trekkers to apply the Upper Mustang Trekking Permit. If you alone and still interested to trek to that area, we can try to find another single trekkers or join you to with others group to issue the permit. After obtain the permit you join in entry and exit time and the rest of the time, you can trek alone with your guide.

Can visit Lama, King or etc: Officially there is no anymore king in Upper Mustang but if you wish to see the former king (Jigme Parwal Bista) that would be possible with his permission. It is normally possible to meet Lama in the monastery and talk to them.

Tour leader discount: If you are a tour leader, we offer you a complementary 10+1 (logistic, meal, accommodation etc) but the permit fee and other entrances must be paid.

Date change possible: After issue the permit, normally it is not possible. If there is reasonable cause, we will try to request to the officer to postpone for few days but once you checked in to the area, there is no cancellation, postpone.

How to book: To make a reservation, we require passport details, flight details and passport size photo. We will proceed the permit and necessary formalities and once you arrive, with your original passport the permit will be apply.

Payment and booking: Your booking will be confirmed after drop a advance payment of 25% of the total invoice.  We accept bank transfer or major credit card payment.  The rest of the payment will be made upon your arrival in Nepal (Kathmandu).

Itinerary

Our representative will be see you in the Nepal airport and transfer to Hotel in the city center. We will welcome to our city office and finalize the formalities. Take a free easy evening to stroll around. Over night in the Hotel.

Breakfast will be serve at hotel's restaurant and drive to sightseeing by car with guide to the world heritage sites (Pashupatinath- Hindu temple, Boudhanath - Buddhist stupa, Swyambhunath - Buddhist Stupa and Patan Durbar Square). Back to Hotel and after refreshment walk to visit our office, briefing about trekking and introduce guide and other staff. Free in the evening. Overnight in the Hotel. BB

After early breakfast drive to Tourist bus park. Take a regular tourist bus at 7:00AM which will take approximately 6hr.Transfer to hotel and after refresh, walk around the lake side. Overnight in the Hotel. BB

Have a light breakfast at your hotel and drive to airport. Take 20 minutes Trans Himalayan flight to Jomsom. You will view and can take some video of over 8,000 M Mountain such as Annapurna & Dhaulagiri. After some tea and coffee continue trek to Kagbeni. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house.

You will check in to the control area of Nepal and follow the Kali Gandaki (Holy river) to Chele a small village. During the walk we have scenic picturesque place to stop through the sandy and windy trails. This trails follows the up and downhill. We will come on cross white washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple gardens. We head on to small ridges reach at Chele village. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house. Overnight at Loge/ guest house.

The trek will hike through the barren mountain Tibetan cultural village. You will pass through a narrow trails and rocky trails. You will come on cross the cave known as Ramchung Cave. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house. Overnight at Loge/ guest house. (B, L, D)

your will encounter two passes (Yamda La (3,850m and Nyi Pass 4,010m) before arrive to Ghami. The trail passing about 400m, you may feel difficult to breath as this is a dry region as well as. This day would be a little longer. Ghami is the third largest village in the Lo region, is surrounded by large fields most of which are barren. Over night at Loge/ guest house. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house (B, L, D)

Trek starts after breakfast with a pleasant walk. After crossing Ghaymi Khola, the trail climbs to a plateau and passes beside a very long Mani wall, a sacred stone wall made by the Buddhist followers. From the end of the wall, the village starts and each house are making separate by stone wall. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house (B, L, D)

Today, We trek to our final destination, Lo-Mangthang (the lost forbidden kingdom of TIbet) with a magnificent view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak. The trail first descends to Charang Chu Canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river. While arriving to Lo-Mangthang, views of the walled city appear magnificent with its hills on the north Tibetan Border. Over night at Loge/ guest house. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house.

This is a great day to explore the virgin of Lomanthang, the major Gumpas around the Lo-manthang including Namgyal Gompa, Tingkhar, Champa Lakhang "God house", Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Entrance Hall and around. Another attraction is the four-story building of the king's palace as well as the surrounding panoramic views of the Himalaya. Overnight at guest house. Lunch and dinner will be provided from the guest house.

Trek to Drakmar is little diversion than a you trekked while going. This will give you some wonder while arrive at Gyakar, with more than 1200 years old Ghar Gompa with Guru Rinpoche. The Gompa is also famous for its rock paintings. Explore the local area. Over night at Loge/ guest house. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house.

This is an easy descending to Ghiling. It will take approximately 6 hrs. Starting early in the morning is always better while trekking this areas as afternoon seems dusty and windy. Over night at Loge/ guest house. Lunch will be serving on the way. Dinner will at the guest house.

Trek back to Chusang for the overnight stop after 5 hrs walk. You will have wonderful scenery during the journey with a Himalayan view. Enjoy your trip and overnight at tea house. Overnight at Loge/ guest house.

Trek down to Kagbeni will join you to regular Annapurna Circuit. Your permit will be sign out at Kagbeni and continue to trek to Jomsom. Enjoy your last night at the mountain. You can invite to your crew to join a last night party and make little like a party. Lunch will be at Kagbeni and dinner at you lodge. Overnight at guest house.

Wake up early in the morning to see the last view of mountain. Take breakfast and walk down to airport. Take a scenic flight to Pokhara. Transfer to your hotel and have a free day. Overnight at the Hotel.

After a light breakfast, take a taxi to tourist bus park and ride a regular tourist bus to Kahtmandu. Transfer to your hotel and free.

This is a cushion day that has been built into the itinerary to allow for delays due to flights or other reasons beyond our control. If you are able to complete your trek in time then this day may be used for sight seeing around Kathmandu Valley. Or free for shopping days.

Enjoy the morning around downtown for last minute shopping or etc. later we will transfer to airport  for the final departure.

Frequently asked questions

Jomson airport is situated at an altitude of 2700m form sea level in between Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri. The flights are operated in a clear morning. All the flights are flew to morning as it requires a clear vision.
Jigme parwal Bista is the last king of Lo-manthang.
