Tsum Valley Trekking

25 Days

The Tsum Valley, nestled northeast of the Manaslu trail, offers a hidden treasure trove of cultural and natural beauty. Opened to trekkers in 2008, this secluded valley is home to the Tsumbas, a Tibetan-origin community that speaks a distinct dialect and maintains trade links to the north. Renowned for its ancient art, culture, and religious significance, the Tsum Valley is a fascinating extension to the classic Manaslu trek.

The journey begins with a scenic drive through the Middle Hills to Soti Khola, the trailhead beyond Arughat. From there, the trek crosses rolling ridges and charming villages, ascending to Philim before veering east into the enchanting Tsum Valley. The valley transitions from the narrower lower section to the expansive Upper Tsum Valley, where barley, maize, buckwheat, and potatoes are cultivated. Wildlife enthusiasts might spot Himalayan tahrs, blue sheep (Jharal), and, with some luck, the elusive snow leopard.

Highlights of the trek include the village of Chhekampar, known for its traditional stone houses and slate roofs, as well as Milarepa’s cave, steeped in spiritual lore. The monasteries of Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa house nuns of the Ngak-pa sect and offer a glimpse into the valley’s spiritual life. Gumba Lungdang, another significant nunnery, welcomes trekkers to attend evening prayers, and its 360° views are a visual feast. From here, a forested path leads to Ganesh Himal Base Camp.

Rejoining the Manaslu Circuit at Lokpa, the trail ascends through the Kutang and Nupri valleys, once part of Tibet until the 1840s. These areas, inhabited by a distinct Tibetan community, reveal stunning views of Himal Chuli, Ngadi Chuli, and Mount Manaslu, with their impressive glaciers.

In Samagaon, trekkers can visit the Kargyu Chholing Monastery and Pungyen Nunnery. A high trail leads to Manaslu Base Camp, where climbers first summited in 1959 with a Japanese expedition. The trek continues with a two-day gradual ascent to the Larkya La Pass, offering breathtaking vistas along the way.

The descent leads into the forested Marsyangdi Valley, where the route joins the Annapurna Circuit Trail. From Tal, the journey concludes with a jeep or bus ride back to Kathmandu, leaving trekkers with memories of an extraordinary adventure through the Tsum Valley and Manaslu region.
